The Problem
Low delta T is a common problem in the Middle East region, with significant seasonal climatic variances and temperature fluctuations between night and day.
For building owners and operators, low delta T leads to high energy consumption and if the property is supplied by District Cooling, a low delta T on the building-side often results in penalties from the District Cooling Providers, as it increases demand on the district cooling plant.
District Cooling Providers should also be wary of low delta T on the primary-side, as failing to deliver the specified delta T can give rise to complaints and claims from secondary-side consumers.
Causes
There are various causes of low delta T, ranging from sizing to water quality and inefficient operation of the chilled water system. Some of the common causes are:
Oversized cooling plant
It is common practice in the Middle East to oversize plant and equipment, to allow for potential expansion of the system and to accommodate peak load conditions. However, this is often not translated into an effective control sequence, resulting in over-pumping.
Varying cooling load
Cooling demand often varies depending on the time of day, use of a facility and the seasonal climate. Although many designs consider diversity, most actual load conditions are different to the basis of design and the sequence of operation should be reconfigured for actual occupancy and demand trends.
Scaling & fouling of pipework
Inadequate water treatment control leads to blocked strainers and coils, as well as scale and bacteria lining the inner pipe lining. This results in increased pressure differentials and reduced flow through coils, thus affecting the delta T.
The Solution
The most-effective solution is usually a combination of individual measures. These solutions often comprise of adjusting the sequence of operation and applying an effective chemical treatment and filtration programming. Sometimes it is unavoidable to replace equipment and components, however, this should be a last resort.
